Lutron dimmers - The kinds of light bulbs to dim:

Lutron lighting makes dimmers to control a wide variety of light bulbs. It is important to know which light dimmers dim which kinds of light bulbs.

Incandescent Dimmers dim these light bulbs:
  • All kinds of normal bulbs - 120V or 130V;
  • R and BR bulbs;
  • A lamps;
  • line voltage halogens - PAR lamps;
If you have low voltage light bulbs, what type of step down transformers do your fixtures have? (Low voltage transformers take 120V and step the voltage down to 12V).
  • Magnetic transformer - use magnetic low voltage dimmers.
  • Electronic transformer - use electronic low voltage dimmers.
Magnetic Low Voltage Dimmers dim these light bulbs:
(Magnetic Low Voltage Dimmers are "backward compatible". They can also dim normal, line voltage light bulbs.)
  • Low voltage light bulbs - PAR36.
  • MR16 - 12V and 24V.
  • All kinds of normal bulbs - 120V or 130V.
  • R and BR bulbs.
  • A lamps.
  • line voltage halogens - PAR lamps.
Electronic Low Voltage Dimmers dim these light bulbs: (Electronic Low Voltage Dimmers are NOT "backward compatible". They cannot dim normal, line voltage light bulbs)
  • low voltage light bulbs - PAR36;
  • MR16 - 12V and 24V;
  • Xenon;
Fluorescent Dimmers dim these light bulbs: fixtures need specialized dimming ballasts to work:
  • Straight tube 3 foot - 4 foot.
  • T12 bulbs.
  • T8 bulbs.
  • All types of 4 pin compact fluorescents.

Selecting the right Lutron dimmer wattage:

Dimmers are rated for maximum wattage:
  • Incandescent dimmer wattages are usually max 600W or 1000W.
  • Electronic low voltage dimmer have maximum wattages of 300W, 500W, or 600W.
  • Magnetic low voltage dimmers have maximum wattages of 450, 600W, or 800W.

Add up the wattages of every light bulb being dimmed by that light dimmer. The dimmer must be rated equal to or more than the total wattage of all the bulbs being dimmed. As a general rule - if the wattage is almost equal to the dimmer's max wattage, it is better to select a dimmer that can handle more wattage.

Light Dimmer Switches: Single-Pole - 3-Way - Multi-Location

Single-Pole Dimmers (or single-location dimmers): used when you want to dim one set of lights from only one location.

When you want to control a single set of lights from two different locations you have different options:

3-Way Dimmers:

When you want to dim from only one side of the room - use a 3-Way dimmer on one side and a 3-Way switch on the other.

Multi-Location Dimmers:

When you want to dim a single set of lights from two locations (dim from both sides of room) - use a multi-location master dimmer on one side and a multi-location smart remote signal sender on the other.

When you want to control a single set of lights from three different locations:

To only dim the lights from the dimmer: Use 3-Way dimmer, a 3-Way switch and a 4-Way switch.

If you want to dim from all three locations: Use a multi-location dimmer and two multi-location smart remote dimmers.
