Four good lighting options are fluorescent, recessed, decorative pendant, or mini pendants.

Fluorescent Light Fixtures:

2 x 4 or 4 x 4 fluorescent kitchen light fixtures work well for general and task lighting. Sometimes called "clouds", these surface mounted fixtures are good when recessed lighting is not an option such as on a remodel job.

Recessed Light Fixtures:

Recessed downlights spaced 3' - 4’ on center will work fine too especially if you are using recessed fixtures for the rest of the kitchen. They provide an unobtrusive light source that many people prefer.

Decorative Kitchen Island Pendants:

These larger ornamental fixtures are great for enhancing the décor of the room. Some fixtures provide multiple functions serving as pot hangers along with light fixtures. Kitchen island lights are also great as pool table lights or billiard lighting.

Mini Pendants:

Mini pendant lighting over the kitchen island also provides a nice decorative touch. Make sure the mini pendants are high enough to see under them and so they will not get dirty from cooking on the stove top. The spacing should be about one pendant per every three feet of length.
